The only scenario I can imagine is: you are one goal down, 4 minutes left to play.

Even then, I'd take the 5-on-4 and instruct my players to try to look for either a shorthanded breakaway and/or a chance in the final minute to pull the goalie to make it a 5-on-5. I wouldn't take the 5-on-3 under any circumstance.

I would bet, if you can find some stats-> "full 2 mins 5 on 3" vs "pulled goalie 4 on 5"
the first would beat the latter..

Maybe in terms of not giving up another goal (although I'm not so sure about that -- have not seen such a statistical look but it would be interesting) but don't forget that the shorthanded team still would need to score another goal to tie the game. While 5-on-3 shorthanded goals happen every once in awhile, the odds of that are MUCH less than a 5-on-4 shorthanded goal or a 5-on-5 (the fifth skater on ice with goalie pulled).

Sorry to switch gears, not sure how serious the Leafs are about dealing Gardiner, but really curious with our strength of young centers, Schenn, Laughton, Couts, (Giroux & Vinny manning the top 2 lines for the foreseeable future) would/could we have any interest in a move for Gardiner? (Taking into account that our top 2 offensive D men are both over 35 as well.

Don't forget some chance to score 2 in the final 2 minutes! (similar to basketball fouls, forcing one point shots...)

I'd have interest in seeing the Flyers pursue Gardiner. As far as what it would take to get the deal done, I don't know. I haven't heard.

Absolutely, but I'd just be happy with somehow forcing overtime in that situation!

Thank you

So would I as well, similar to the Luke Schenn deal, it would somewhat balance out our young assets if a one for one deal could be had somehow.
Not sure if Couts straight up would do that for them?

Knowing that the Flyers D is in trouble and the Leafs are in the same conference, the asking price will be high. Guaranteed they'd want either Laughton or Couturier, because we all know they don't want either of the Schenns!

Good stuff, Bill. I still can't agree on Rosehill having a spot on a NHL roster. He does skate as well as any designated goon and can provide physical play besides fighting, but I still doubt he's anywhere near the NHL if he couldn't fight.

But other than that, really good stuff on getting the info from Fraser & Stewart. I doubt anyone else even thought to look into that situation and investigate what the deal was. So Kudos

Any thoughts on the quarterly big buff to philly rumors? I have serious doubts about that one.

I mean, even if they score PP, you still have 2 minutes to score 2 goals and force OT

Same view as before: Stay away from Byfuglien.

I see. Still think I'd prefer the 5-on-4 for the remainder of regulation.

C'mon, it'd be great seeing Crossing Broad's repeated pieces on Big Buf at Geno's at 3 am

Extremely interesting blog Bill. Thanks for the rules lesson. 5 on 3 is the absolute worst other than a 4 on 3 in OT, so no, I'd never take that under any circumstances. At least our new coach made the right choice! LOL

As much as I'd like another right shot and someone who can move on the back end, Dustin Byfuglien isn't a guy who I'd want to see.

As a professional athlete, the one thing no one should ever question is your conditioning. Your foot speed, your hockey IQ, your shot...fine. Those things are physical limitations that have ceilings.

But your physical conditioning is something you can control, and too many have questioned Byfuglien's desire to be fit, for too long, for it to be just rumor and innuendo.

Not worth it. I am wondering who will be UFAs on D this TDL? There is no doubt to me we need help, and with a lot of our prospects still a ways away, maybe we can look at a trade for TDL or UFA offseason.

Bill, Yesterday I pointed out that Philly considered trading g awhile ago to Florida. Other posters never heard of it but I'm certain I heard somewhere that Philly did indeed consider a trade of g to Florida. Do you recall this any any details of those rumors. I think g was still in jr's at the time but not certain?

Agree 100%. Hope they stay far away from Byfuglien.
